JOHOR BARU: Fourteen new hotels offering 3,000 rooms will be opened in Iskandar Malaysia within the next four years.

Johor Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong said the opening of the new three, four and five-star hotels was to cater to the surge in tourist arrivals to south Johor.

He said with the 14 new hotels, the number of hotel rooms in the state would increase from 13,381 to 16,381 by 2020.

There are currently 164 three, four and five-star hotels in Johor compared to 149 hotels in 2013.

“The investment by local and foreign companies reflect their confidence in the tourism sector,” said Tee after opening the three-star, 200-room V8 Hotel costing about RM30mil at Taman Nusa Bestari, Skudai near here.

Tee said the Johor Tourism Master Plan (2014-2023), focused on positioning and developing the state as a main tourist destination in the country.

He said Johor has a wide range of tourism products such as beautiful islands, pristine beaches, tropical rainforests as well as shopping attractions, theme parks and golf courses.

“Statistics from the Tourism and Culture Ministry showed that Johor received an increase in the number of tourist arrivals from 6.42 million in 2014 to 6.95 million last year,” said Tee.

He said out of this number, four million were locals while the remaining 2.95 million tourists comprised mainly Singaporeans, Indonesians and Chinese.

“We are exploring new markets especially tourists from India and the Middle East,” he said.

Similarly, Tee said there are plans to transform the Mersing district on the north east of Johor into a regional tourist destination.

He said the district, about 130km from here and located near the Endau-Rompin National Park, had great potential.
