JOHOR BARU: The Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar has contributed a whopping RM50 million to the Darul Ta’zim football club.

This was announced by his son, Tunku Mahkota Johor Tunku Ismail through the Johor Southern Tigers Facebook page today. “I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincerest gratitude towards HM The Sultan of Johor, for his RM50 million contribution to the club,” said Tunku Ismail. “This comes from the realisation that the Johor football project is one for the long haul, and serves as a unifying factor that brings together all of Bangsa Johor,” he said.

The announcement came the same day as it was confirmed that Tunku Ismail had become the owner of the football club, popularly referred to as JDT. State Secretary and Johor FA president, Datuk Ismail Karim had said in a statement that Tunku Ismail would become the club’s owner in the 2016 season.

Meanwhile, Tunku Ismail said the JDT’s priority was development of infrastructure and young talents. “We must learn from the mistakes that are done by some of our rivals, as the wise learn from the mistakes of others. “We have already created history, now it is up to us to continue the streak of excellence,” said Tunku Ismail, referring to JDT’s historic victory in becoming the first Malaysian side to win the Asian Football Confederation Cup (AFC) final last October 31.
