JOHOR BARU: Johor hopes to attract avid Indonesian and Singaporean shoppers to splurge during the 10-day Johor Mega Sales 2016, held for the first time in the state.

State Tourism, Domestic Trade and Consumerism Committee chairman Datuk Tee Siew Kiong said that the shopping sector has been an important factor in fulfilling the domestic and international tourists demands.

He added that the government, through Johor Tourism, has been planning to strengthen efforts to promote tourism here under the Johor Strategic Tourism Marketing Plan (2016-2020).

“According to the Johor Economic Report 2014/2015, the wholesale, retail and restaurant sub-sector showed improvement with an increased contribution of 5.2% when compared to 2013 to 2014.

“The wholesale sector rose from RM3.3bil to RM4.5bil, retail saw increase from RM4.1bil to RM4.5bil while restaurants surged from RM1.6bil to RM1.7bil,” he said during a press conference on the mega sales here on Thursday.

Tee said Johor Mega Sales 2016, which will see participation of all supermarkets and sales premises statewide between May 28 and June 5, is organised as an effort to support the Xplore Johor initiative.

“As of now, nine shopping complexes have applied to join the mega sales including Komtar JBCC, City Square, Angsana, Pelangi Plaza, Danga City Mall, Aeon Bukit Indah, Sutra Mall, Kotaraya Galleria and Aeon Tebrau City,” he said urging more malls to confirm participation before the deadline on May 22.

He also called on the participating malls to be more creative in promoting their complexes through the campaign, as the mega sales could help increase competitiveness among the industry players.

Meanwhile, the state tourism department also announced popular local actress Fasha Sandha as the ambassador for the Johor Mega Sales 2016, the largest shopping event in the state.

Johor-born Fasha, whose real name is Nur Fasha Hassan, 32, was chosen based on her background, interesting and positive personality as well as her popularity.

She said she was honoured to take on the role, adding that personally, it was her biggest recognition yet since tapping into the entertainment industry in 2012.

“Although I have represented a few products prior to this, becoming the Johor Mega Sales 2016 ambassador is most meaningful to me,” she said.

The state Tourism department will also organise the Fiesta Grandeur Carnival in line with the mega sales, from May 27 to June 2, at Plaza Angsana here.
