The highlight for the all-Malaysian team came on the first two days.

On Tuesday, they became the first all-Malaysian team since the Monsoon Cup’s inception 11 years ago to collect one point after winning their opening match against Keith Swinton’s Black Swan Racing in the qualifying round.

On Wednesday, Hazwan and his crew again made the country proud by defeating the world’s second-ranked team Naustika Racing, led by Bjorn Hansen.

But all that came to nought on the third day of the round-robin competition as they dropped to 12th – and last – after failing to collect any points in their remaining races. The top eight teams advanced to Friday’s quarter-finals.

“Our goal was to at least score a point, but we managed two, which is a bonus for us. I’m pleased that with our winnings, we managed to put ourselves on par with the international sailors,” he said at the end of third-day races at the Puteri Harbour Marina here.

“I only hope that sponsors will start to back us as we aim to advance to world racing tours.”

Taylor Canfield, skipper of US One of the US Virgin Islands, continued to head the star-studded cast, leading the scoreboard and breezing into the quarter-finals with five-time world champion Ian Williams of GAC Pindar, Dane Joachim Aschenbrenner (Aschenbrenner Racing), Nicolai Sehested (Trefor Match Racing) and Swiss skipper Eric Monnin (Team Sailbox).

Hansen (Naustika Racing) are fourth spot, followed by Johnie Berntsson (Berntsson Sailing Team), Swinton (Black Swan Racing), Phil Robertson (Waka Racing), Reuben Corbett (Corbett Racing Team), Maximilian Soh (Team Red Dot) and Haswan’s HazOne Racing Team.

Corbett, Maximilian and Hazwan are definitely out of the quarter-finals while Swinton, Hansen, Berntsson and Robertson are vying for the three remaining spots.
